However, different rules apply if one is buying their first home.

It may be that they pay no or less tax if one is a first-time buyer due to an SDLT relief for those in this situation.

Under this relief, if the buyers are purchasing a residential property for the first time on or after November 22, 2017, and the purchase price is no more than £500,000, then one pays zero percent on the first £300,000.

The rate stands at five percent on the remainder up to £500,000.
